BSc Forensic Science
About this course
Forensic science applies natural science principles to the investigation of crime and legal proceedings. It draws on chemistry, biology, physics and computing to analyse physical evidence, from DNA and trace materials to digital data and toxicology results, providing the objective scientific information that courts, investigators and legal professionals rely on. It is a discipline that requires both technical precision and a thorough understanding of the legal and procedural frameworks that govern how evidence is collected, handled, analysed and presented. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this three-year full-time degree is accredited by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, which provides important professional recognition and ensures the curriculum meets the standards of the forensic science profession. The programme is available with a foundation year for students who need additional scientific preparation before entering degree-level study. Across the full programme you will study the science of evidence analysis, including forensic chemistry, biology, toxicology, scene examination and digital forensics, alongside the legal and procedural context in which forensic science operates. A sandwich year placement and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you significant professional experience in forensic, law enforcement or related science settings and ensuring your training is directly connected to the realities of professional practice. You will develop strong practical laboratory skills alongside the analytical and critical thinking that rigorous scientific investigation demands. The ability to present scientific findings clearly and accurately in written reports and, where appropriate, as expert evidence is also central. Graduates move into roles in forensic science services, law enforcement, the criminal justice system, toxicology laboratories, environmental analysis, research, and related scientific fields. Postgraduate study in forensic science, analytical chemistry or a related discipline is an option for those who want to develop deeper specialist expertise.
