Forensic science applies the methods and knowledge of chemistry, biology, physics, and related sciences to the investigation of crime and the legal system. It is a discipline that requires both scientific rigour and an understanding of how evidence is collected, analysed, and presented in the context of criminal proceedings, where standards of accuracy and chain of custody are not just professional expectations but legal requirements. The field encompasses crime scene investigation, DNA analysis, toxicology, digital forensics, fingerprinting, and the analysis of documents, fibres, and many other types of physical evidence. At Derby, this part-time programme benefits from state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, including a Bioscience Superlab and Research Lab opened in 2025, providing access to cutting-edge technology and real-world, sector-relevant practical experiences. A foundation year is available for students who need additional scientific preparation before entering the main programme. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement are all incorporated, providing professional experience in forensic or related scientific settings and broadening your perspective on how forensic science is practised in different jurisdictions. Forensic science graduates go on to work in forensic laboratories, police services, the National Crime Agency, the Crown Prosecution Service, defence legal teams, customs and border control, environmental crime investigation, and private forensic service providers. The scientific training is also relevant to roles in healthcare, pharmaceutical quality assurance, and environmental analysis. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in forensic science, toxicology, criminal justice, or related fields, and some pursue doctoral research in areas such as DNA profiling, trace evidence, or digital forensics.
