BSc Forensic Science and Criminology
About this course
Forensic science and criminology is a combination that approaches crime and its investigation from two distinct but complementary directions. Forensic science provides the technical and laboratory-based tools used to gather and analyse physical evidence, from DNA and fingerprinting to trace evidence and digital forensics. Criminology examines crime as a social phenomenon, analysing the causes of offending, the operation of the criminal justice system, the experiences of victims, and the policy frameworks through which societies respond to crime and disorder. Together they give you a uniquely comprehensive perspective on crime and its investigation. At Bedfordshire, this three-year programme is awarded Recognition by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, reflecting that the curriculum meets the professional and academic standards of the field. You will study the core scientific methods of forensic investigation alongside criminological theory, criminal justice policy, and research methodology, developing both practical laboratory skills and the analytical thinking needed to engage with the social dimensions of crime. The combination prepares you for both laboratory and field-based work in the forensic sciences, and for roles in the criminal justice system that require an understanding of how forensic evidence is used in practice. Graduates go on to work in forensic laboratories, police services, the National Crime Agency, the Crown Prosecution Service, victim support organisations, probation, youth justice, and social research. Some pursue careers in security, intelligence, or border control. Many continue to postgraduate study in forensic science, criminology, law, or criminal justice, and some move into academic research or teaching. The CSFS recognition is a meaningful credential for graduate employers in the forensic sciences sector.
