BSc Forensic Psychology
About this course
Forensic psychology applies the principles and methods of psychological science to questions arising in legal and criminal justice contexts. It is concerned with understanding why people commit offences, how individuals behave within the criminal justice system, what psychological needs victims have, and how psychological evidence can inform legal proceedings. The field draws on developmental psychology, social psychology, clinical psychology, and criminological theory, bringing them together in ways that have direct practical consequences for policing, courts, prisons, and the support services that work with both offenders and victims. At Gloucestershire this three-year full-time degree takes you through the core areas of psychological science before applying them to forensic contexts. You will examine different types of offending behaviour, from antisocial conduct and acquisitive crime to sexual violence and terrorism, developing an understanding of the individual, social, and situational factors that contribute to offending. The impact of crime on victims is given serious attention, including the psychological processes involved in trauma and the challenges of providing effective support. Witness memory, the reliability of testimony, and the psychological dimensions of legal proceedings are examined in detail, reflecting the practical importance of these questions for the justice system. The degree is structured to give you both the scientific grounding that psychology requires and the applied knowledge that makes it relevant to forensic settings. You will develop research and analytical skills alongside your substantive knowledge, learning to evaluate evidence critically and to communicate findings clearly. Graduates move into roles in probation services, prison psychology, youth offending, victim support, social care, safeguarding, and police support services. Many go on to further training, as qualification as a forensic psychologist in the UK requires postgraduate study and supervised professional practice. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate programmes in forensic or clinical psychology.
