About this course
Forensic and analytical science brings the methods of chemistry and biology to the investigation of crime, providing the scientific foundation for evidence-gathering, analysis, and interpretation in criminal justice contexts. Forensic science is concerned with applying rigorous scientific methods to questions that have legal consequences, from the examination of physical trace evidence at a crime scene to the analysis of biological samples in a laboratory. Analytical chemistry provides the technical core, encompassing the instruments and methods used to identify, characterise, and quantify substances with the precision that legal standards demand. This three-year, full-time programme at Huddersfield includes a foundation year for those who need additional academic preparation, as well as a placement year that gives you the opportunity to gain professional experience in a forensic or analytical science environment. You will work with a range of techniques used in real forensic science laboratories, including fingerprint development, spectroscopy, chromatography, and methods for the detection and analysis of biological evidence. The programme develops both your scientific knowledge and your understanding of how evidence is collected, preserved, and presented within the criminal justice system, where the chain of custody and the ability to explain findings clearly to non-scientific audiences are as important as technical accuracy. Graduates pursue careers in forensic science laboratories, police scientific support units, toxicology, environmental analysis, pharmaceutical quality control, and the broader analytical science industry.
