BA Finnish and Romanian
About this course
Finnish and Romanian are two of the most linguistically distinctive languages on the European continent. Finnish belongs to the Finno-Ugric family, making it structurally unlike most other European languages, which are largely Indo-European, while Romanian is a Romance language of the eastern branch, descended directly from Latin and carrying a complex history of contact with Slavic, Greek, Hungarian, and Turkish over many centuries. Studying them together is a genuinely unusual and intellectually rewarding undertaking, one that sheds light on the diversity of European linguistic traditions and opens two distinct cultural and national worlds. At University College London, this four-year programme develops proficiency in both languages alongside engagement with the cultures, histories, and literatures of Finland and Romania. You will work on Finnish and Romanian at an advanced level throughout the programme, building skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in both languages. UCL is one of the few institutions in the UK where this combination can be studied, and the programme draws on the expertise of specialists in both languages and their associated cultural traditions. You will engage with Finnish and Romanian literature, history, and contemporary society, developing the contextual knowledge that makes language more than just a system of communication and deepens your understanding of two countries with very different but equally fascinating stories. Graduates with this combination of languages are genuinely rare and, in the right professional contexts, highly valued. Careers in diplomacy, the foreign service, translation and interpreting, journalism, international organisations, cultural relations, and academic research are all natural destinations. The rigour of studying two challenging and unfamiliar languages at university level also develops strong analytical, disciplinary, and cognitive skills that transfer across many other professional contexts. Postgraduate study in translation, linguistics, or European area studies is also a well-established route.
