BA Finnish and Italian
About this course
Finnish and Italian is an unusual and rewarding combination that brings together two linguistically distinctive and culturally rich languages. Italian is the language of one of Europe's great artistic and intellectual traditions, spoken by over 60 million people, and the gateway to centuries of literature, opera, visual art, philosophy, and design that have shaped world culture. Finnish is a Finno-Ugric language, structurally unlike the Indo-European languages of most European countries, and the key to a rich literary and musical culture as well as to one of the world's most innovative and technologically advanced societies. Studying both together develops not just linguistic range but genuine cross-cultural flexibility. At University College London, this four-year, full-time joint honours programme divides your study equally between Finnish and Italian. You will develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation in both languages, while also engaging with cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics in each language's context. The breadth of modules available lets you shape the degree around your particular interests, and the third year is spent abroad, divided between a Finnish-speaking and an Italian-speaking country, giving you the immersive linguistic and cultural experience that is essential for reaching an advanced level in both. Graduates of Finnish and Italian pursue careers in translation and interpretation, diplomacy, international business, journalism, teaching, cultural and educational organisations, and the European civil service. Finnish and Italian together are a genuinely distinctive combination that few people achieve, opening roles wherever engagement with Finland, Scandinavia, Italy, or the wider Francophone and Italophone world is a professional asset. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in modern languages, translation, or cultural studies, building specialist academic or professional careers.
