About this course

Fine art is the practice and study of making art for its own sake, pursuing ideas, experiences and meanings through visual and material form. It encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, video, installation, performance and digital media, and draws on a long tradition of critical and theoretical engagement with what art is, what it is for and how it operates in the world. Studying fine art develops not only technical skill but the capacity for independent creative thinking, self-directed research and the ability to articulate and defend your ideas. At the University of Suffolk, fine art is described as a diverse and vibrant creative community where students engage actively in both critical practice and practical skills, supported by experts in the field. The part-time structure of the programme allows you to develop your practice at a pace that suits your life, which for many artists is important: sustained creative work benefits from time to reflect and to experiment without rushing. You will work in and across media, developing technical abilities alongside a personal artistic language. Critical and contextual studies run through the programme, situating your work within the history and theory of art and developing your ability to read, write and think carefully about practice. Studio critique, peer review and exhibition are central to the learning culture, building your confidence in discussing your work and engaging with the work of others. Graduates go on to sustained artistic practice, often alongside careers in art education, arts administration, community arts, galleries and museums, curation, illustration, design and the creative industries more broadly. Many continue to postgraduate study in fine art or related disciplines, including taught master's programmes and doctoral research. The independent thinking, visual literacy and ability to sustain a long-term creative project that fine art develops are qualities valued in many fields beyond the studio.
