BA Filmmaking
About this course
Filmmaking is the craft and art of telling stories through moving images, combining the creative vision of the storyteller with the practical skills of production to realise ideas on screen. It encompasses screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, sound design and production management, and it demands both technical fluency and the ability to make creative decisions under pressure, within budget, and in collaboration with a team. Film is one of the most culturally powerful and economically significant art forms in the world, and a degree in filmmaking gives you the foundations to contribute to it. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, you will follow a three-year programme that develops your skills across the full range of film production practices. Bristol has a thriving screen industry, including a significant documentary and natural history production community, and the university's connections to that environment give the programme real professional relevance. You will work on practical filmmaking projects from early in the degree, developing your directing, cinematography, editing and production skills through making real films rather than merely studying them. Critical and contextual understanding is developed alongside the practical work, giving you a framework for thinking analytically about the choices you and others make. Filmmaking graduates find careers in film and television production, documentary, short film, corporate video, broadcast journalism, post-production, digital content creation, and the growing world of online and streaming media. Roles include director, producer, cinematographer, editor, sound designer, production manager, and many others across the production process. Bristol's position as a centre of UK film and television production offers particularly strong local industry connections. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in film, screenwriting or directing, while others build careers by working independently on short films and documentary projects that extend their portfolio and professional reputation.
