BA Filmmaking
About this course
Filmmaking is the art and craft of telling stories through moving images, combining creative vision with technical skill across every stage of the production process, from development and scriptwriting through shooting and performance direction to editing, sound design, and post-production. It is a discipline that requires you to think visually and narratively at the same time, understanding both what an image means and how to capture it, and developing the collaborative and organisational skills that production in any medium demands. Film is one of the most powerful means of communication and artistic expression available, and learning to make it well is a rigorous and rewarding creative education. At Leeds Arts University this three-year programme gives you hands-on experience in every stage of the filmmaking process, from storytelling and concept development through production and into post-production. You will develop your understanding of how to construct and communicate narrative through image and sound, working on your own projects and collaborating with others, building a portfolio of work that demonstrates your range and your developing voice as a filmmaker. Leeds Arts University's specialist creative environment, with its focus on arts practice, means your filmmaking development is situated within a broader conversation about creativity, visual culture, and artistic practice. Filmmaking graduates work in the screen industries in a wide range of roles, including director, cinematographer, editor, producer, screenwriter, documentary filmmaker, and content creator across film, television, online video, and digital media. The technical and creative skills developed in the course are also valued in advertising, corporate production, arts and heritage, and social media content. Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine different aspects of production work. Further study at postgraduate level in film, documentary, screenwriting, or producing is an option for those wishing to deepen their specialism or develop a research practice in filmmaking.
