BA Film, TV and Stage Design
About this course
Production design for film, television, and stage is the discipline concerned with creating the visual world in which stories unfold. The production designer or set designer is responsible for the environments that performers inhabit, from the specific texture of a period drama's interior to the abstract landscapes of a science fiction film and the practical demands of a live theatrical production. It is a discipline that requires both creative vision and technical competence, combining an understanding of history, art, architecture, and material culture with the practical skills of spatial design, model-making, drafting, and collaboration with directors and cinematographers. At Salford, which has a campus at MediaCity in Salford, home to the BBC and ITV, this three-year full-time degree places you in the heart of the UK's most significant production hub outside London. You will study in close proximity to major television production companies and gain direct access to the industry networks that make the programme's connections genuinely useful. The curriculum develops your skills in designing for screen and stage, from research and concept development through to technical execution and production management, and it draws on Salford's strong relationships with the film, television, and stage industries. Graduates go on to careers as set designers, art directors, production designers, props buyers, scenic artists, and in many other roles within the art department of film, television, theatre, and live entertainment productions. The production design profession is highly collaborative, and the skills you develop are also valued in related fields such as events production, exhibition design, and immersive experience design. Many graduates begin their careers in junior art department roles and progress through the industry as they build their portfolio and professional network.
