BA Film & TV and History
About this course
Film, television, and history are disciplines that speak to each other in important ways. Moving image media are both products of their historical moment and powerful forces in shaping how that moment is remembered and understood, while historical study provides the critical tools to read those media carefully, to situate them in their contexts, and to question the stories they tell. Studying them together allows you to move between the analytical frameworks of each discipline and to generate insights that neither would produce alone. At Nottingham Trent you will engage with a comprehensive range of national and international film and television industries and eras, alongside wide-ranging historical modules that span from the medieval period through to the twenty-first century. The programme is designed to give you both breadth and depth: you can maintain a broad engagement with both disciplines throughout your studies or choose to specialise in particular areas as you progress. There are multiple opportunities to combine your knowledge and skills from both fields, communicating your ideas in innovative ways to diverse audiences. The part-time structure gives you flexibility, and the programme includes a placement year that connects your academic study to professional experience in the creative or heritage sectors. You will develop skills in critical analysis, research, and communication that are applicable across a wide range of professional contexts. Graduates go on to careers in film and television production, broadcasting, heritage, archives, journalism, education, museum work, and the wider creative industries. The combination of critical, historical, and media literacy skills is valued wherever complex cultural material needs to be understood and communicated clearly. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in film studies, history, media, or related disciplines, and the research skills developed on this programme provide a strong foundation for that further work.
