BA Film
About this course
Film is one of the defining art forms of the past century and a half, combining visual storytelling, performance, sound design, editing and the direction of audience attention in ways that are uniquely powerful and pervasive. Studying film at degree level means taking its forms, histories and social implications seriously: understanding how cinematic language works, how films are situated in their cultural and industrial contexts, and how both critical analysis and practical filmmaking contribute to a deep engagement with the medium. At the University of Westminster you will study this three-year programme at one of the best-known film courses in the world, with an international reputation for combining rigorous academic study with genuine practical training. The programme develops thinking filmmakers who have something to say to, and about, the world, integrating critical and theoretical understanding with the skills of production. You will study film history, theory, and critical analysis alongside practical filmmaking in screenwriting, directing, cinematography and editing, developing the intellectual and creative capacities that serious filmmaking demands. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct industry experience before you graduate. Film graduates from Westminster have a strong track record in the industry. Careers include directing, producing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, visual effects, film criticism and journalism, programming for festivals and cinemas, and a wide range of roles in broadcast television and streaming media. The programme's location in London gives you access to one of the world's most active film and television industries. Postgraduate study in film, screenwriting, directing or documentary is an option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue academic careers. The critical and analytical skills the degree develops are also valued in arts journalism, cultural programming, teaching, and any field that requires sophisticated engagement with moving image culture.
