About this course

Film and television studies with theatre studies at the University of Glasgow is a four-year joint honours programme that examines two of the most significant forms of human performance and storytelling, asking how moving images and live theatre each create meaning, what their respective relationships to reality and representation are, and how they have developed as cultural forms across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Film and television studies, taught by researchers who are leading figures in the field, investigates cinema and television as aesthetic, industrial, and cultural phenomena. Theatre studies addresses the history, theory, and practice of live performance, from classical drama through modernism to the experimental and politically engaged theatre of the present day. The programme includes a year abroad. You will develop critical and analytical skills in both film and theatre, learning to read texts and performances with precision and to engage with the theoretical frameworks, historical contexts, and cultural politics that shape both forms. Glasgow's strong connections with the city's creative and cultural organisations, including input from policymakers and screen practitioners, bring professional dimensions into the academic programme. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in a different cultural and academic environment, encountering different film and theatrical traditions. A typical entry tariff of 216 points reflects the selectivity of the programme. Graduates move into careers in film and television production, theatre-making and management, arts administration and cultural policy, journalism, education, digital media, and a wide range of roles in the creative industries. Many continue to postgraduate study in film, theatre, performance studies, or cultural theory.
