BSc Film Technology
About this course
Film technology is the technical discipline concerned with the equipment, systems and processes through which films are captured, edited and presented. It encompasses camera systems and optics, sound recording and design, lighting technology, editing workflows, colour grading, post-production processes, digital projection and the preservation and archiving of film materials. As the film and television industry has shifted from analogue to digital production and distribution, the technical demands on those who work within it have evolved rapidly, and graduates who understand both the creative and technical dimensions of filmmaking are increasingly valuable. At Nottingham Trent, this three-year full-time programme gives you practical and theoretical grounding in film technology, working with industry-standard equipment and software throughout. You will study camera technology, lens systems and optics, film and digital image capture, sound for film, post-production and colour science, lighting design and practice, editing software, and the workflows through which professional productions are delivered from shoot to screen. The programme develops your ability to support and enable creative filmmaking at a technical level, working alongside directors, cinematographers and editors to realise their vision. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points. Graduates work as camera assistants and operators, gaffers, lighting technicians, sound recordists and mixers, digital imaging technicians, colourists, post-production supervisors, and in a wide range of technical roles in film, television, commercial and documentary production. The film and television industry rewards technical competence combined with collaborative working skills, and the combination of practical training and theoretical understanding that this programme provides prepares graduates for entry-level and junior technical roles. Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine location and studio work, and some continue to postgraduate or specialist technical training.
