BA Film Production
About this course
Film production is the art and craft of making films, encompassing the full creative and technical process from idea and script through principal photography, editing, sound design, and visual effects to the finished work. It is a collaborative discipline that requires both creative vision and practical competence, and the best film-makers understand storytelling in depth alongside the technical and organisational skills needed to bring stories to the screen. The film industry continues to grow and diversify, and the skills of film production are applicable across an expanding range of contexts from cinema and television to corporate video, documentary, advertising, and online content. At the University of Portsmouth, this three-year full-time programme has been accredited by ScreenSkills Select, which is a mark of quality recognised by the UK screen industries. You will develop the creative, practical, technical, and production expertise needed to work in the industry, building skills in directing, cinematography, editing, producing, and visual effects through hands-on production work throughout the degree. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement provision, giving you the professional experience and industry connections that employers in the film sector value highly. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points. Graduates work as filmmakers, directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, visual effects artists, and production managers across the film and television industries. Many also work in corporate video production, advertising, music video, and digital content creation, where film production skills are directly applicable. The ScreenSkills Select accreditation and the professional experience gained through the sandwich year and placements are significant advantages in a competitive industry. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in film production, documentary, or screen writing.
