About this course

Film and media studies and Spanish is a combination that brings together the critical analysis of moving-image culture with the linguistic and cultural richness of the Spanish-speaking world. Film and media is a discipline that examines how films, television, digital media, and other screen forms produce meaning, how they are made and distributed, and what their cultural, political, and social significance is. Spanish adds a vital international dimension, opening access to the cinemas and media cultures of Spain and Latin America, which are among the most vibrant and diverse in the world. At Stirling, this four-year programme develops your analytical skills in film and media alongside Spanish linguistic proficiency and cultural knowledge. You will study film and media theory, screen history, production contexts, and the analysis of specific texts and genres, developing the close reading and argumentative skills that the discipline demands. The Spanish strand develops your language from intermediate or foundation level towards advanced proficiency, with engagement with the literature, cinema, and cultural life of the Hispanic world. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you time in a Spanish-speaking country that deepens both your linguistic ability and your understanding of the cultures you are studying. Graduates are well placed for careers in broadcasting, journalism, film and television production, arts administration, cultural policy, translation and communications, and international business with Hispanic market dimensions. The combination of screen literacy and Spanish language fluency is particularly valuable in contexts involving Latin American or European media and cultural affairs. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in film, media, Hispanic studies, or translation.
