BA Film and Media Studies
About this course
Film and media studies examines one of the most pervasive and culturally significant areas of contemporary life. Film has a history of more than a century as an art form, an industry and a cultural force; media more broadly encompasses television, journalism, digital platforms, social networks, advertising and the structures through which information and entertainment reach audiences at a global scale. Studying both together gives you the analytical frameworks to understand how media content is produced, distributed and consumed, and what it means for individuals, communities and societies. At the University of Keele this three-year full-time programme explores the social, cultural, political and economic aspects of media industries alongside hands-on training with industry-standard equipment and software. You will engage critically with film theory, media history, audience studies and the political economy of the media industries while also developing practical skills in production, editing and the creation of professional-standard work for a portfolio. A sandwich year gives you the opportunity for substantial professional experience before your final year, the option to study abroad adds an international dimension, and work placement opportunities throughout the programme connect academic learning with real creative and media environments. The combination of critical understanding and practical skills positions you well for a wide range of careers in the creative industries and beyond. Graduates move into careers in film production, television, journalism, advertising, public relations, digital media, social media, arts management, education and research. Many pursue further study in film, media, communications or related fields. The portfolio of professional-standard work developed during the degree is a practical asset in the competitive creative sector.
