BA Fashion
About this course
Fashion design sits at the intersection of art, craft and industry. It is a discipline that asks you to develop aesthetic vision and technical skill in parallel, understanding how garments are constructed, how materials behave, how the human body moves, and how cultural, historical and commercial forces shape what people wear. Fashion design requires both creative sensitivity and practical rigour, and it is a field where the best work tends to come from designers who understand their craft deeply rather than those who rely on instinct alone. At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, making it one of the most comprehensively structured fashion degrees available. You will develop skills in pattern cutting, garment construction, textile design, illustration and the visual presentation of collections, alongside an understanding of the broader cultural and commercial contexts of fashion. You will have the opportunity to exhibit your final collection at the graduate fashion show, with past students gaining recognition through industry competitions and design awards that have raised their profiles before graduation. The programme collaborates with the industry to bring current practice into the curriculum and expose you to real commercial design environments. Graduates from fashion programmes pursue careers as fashion designers, pattern cutters, garment technologists, fashion buyers, stylists, fashion journalists, creative directors and textile designers. Many find roles with fashion houses, retailers, manufacturers and design studios, while others develop freelance practices or establish their own labels. The creative, technical and project management skills developed through fashion design are also valued in costume design, film and television production, branding and visual communication. Postgraduate study in fashion design, sustainable fashion or textile innovation is a natural next step for those who want to deepen their practice or move into research and education.
