BA Fashion Photography
About this course
Fashion Photography is a discipline that brings together the visual arts of photography and the creative world of fashion, operating across editorial, commercial, digital and campaign contexts. It requires technical mastery of the camera and of lighting, but equally demands creative vision, an understanding of styling and art direction, and the ability to work collaboratively with designers, stylists, hair and make-up artists and clients to produce images that serve both artistic and commercial purposes. The fashion image is one of the most powerful and pervasive forms of visual communication in contemporary culture, and learning to work within it seriously demands both craft and critical intelligence. At the University of Westminster this part-time degree responds to the industry's demand for skilled and agile graduates by combining rigorous photographic training with styling, fashion communication, digital marketing, branding and campaign development. Westminster's long-established strengths in both photography and fashion give the programme a strong foundation, and the curriculum is designed to produce confident, critically informed visual practitioners who are equipped for fashion photography as well as the broader creative industries. You will develop your technical and creative skills alongside an understanding of the commercial and professional contexts in which fashion image-making takes place. Graduates from Fashion Photography degrees work across editorial, advertising, e-commerce and brand contexts, as fashion photographers, art directors, stylists and creative consultants. Others find roles in digital marketing, visual content production, brand management and social media. The technical photographic skills, fashion knowledge and commercial awareness the degree develops transfer well across the broader creative economy. Postgraduate study in photography, fashion communication or visual arts practice is an option for those wishing to deepen their expertise.
