BA Fashion Photography and Image Production
About this course
Fashion photography and image production is a discipline at the heart of the global fashion industry, responsible for creating the visual language through which clothes, brands, and cultural ideas about beauty, identity, and style are communicated to the world. The field encompasses still photography, fashion film, and multimedia production, and effective practitioners need to be both technically accomplished and creatively fluent, able to translate a creative vision into images that resonate with specific audiences and serve specific commercial or artistic purposes. At Southampton Solent, this three-year full-time programme develops your skills across fashion photography, film, and digital image production, with a particular focus on developing the confidence and technical mastery to work as an image creator in the contemporary fashion environment. A foundation year is available for students who need additional creative or technical preparation before entering the main programme. You will work on briefs that ask you to develop a creative vision, to master the technical tools of image-making, and to produce work that reflects an understanding of how fashion and visual culture intersect. The programme is practice-led and studio-intensive, with emphasis on building a portfolio that demonstrates your capabilities to industry. Graduates work as fashion photographers, fashion film-makers, image directors, retouchers, photo editors, and content creators for fashion brands, magazines, advertising agencies, and digital media platforms. The skills you develop are also relevant to broader commercial photography and film production. Many graduates build freelance or studio-based careers, while others find roles with fashion and creative agencies or in-house creative teams at fashion brands. The ability to conceive, produce, and post-produce high-quality fashion imagery is in consistent demand as the volume and variety of fashion content continues to grow.
