BA Fashion Design with Foundation
About this course
Fashion design is a discipline that sits at the intersection of creativity, technical skill, cultural awareness, and commercial thinking. Fashion designers must understand the body, fabric, construction, and production alongside the cultural currents, trends, and consumer behaviour that drive the industry. The field is constantly evolving, with growing pressure to address sustainability, ethical production, and diversity, and the most exciting work in fashion design today engages critically with these questions while continuing to pursue the formal challenge of creating garments and collections that are beautiful, functional, and culturally resonant. At Westminster this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year that provides a supported entry route for students who do not yet have the qualifications required for direct entry, wish to change their subject specialism, or are returning to education after a break. The foundation year builds the creative, technical, and academic skills needed for degree-level fashion design study. As you progress through the degree you will develop expertise in pattern cutting, garment construction, textile knowledge, and design communication, engaging with both historical and contemporary fashion in a programme taught by staff with strong industry connections. A sandwich year gives you direct professional experience in a fashion company, and work placement opportunities are available throughout. Graduates go on to careers in fashion design, styling, fashion communication, buying, merchandising, pattern cutting, production, and a wide range of roles across the global fashion industry. Westminster's location in London, one of the world's great fashion capitals, provides excellent access to industry events, graduates, and employers. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in fashion design or related fields, deepening their creative practice and professional expertise.
