BA Fashion Design
About this course
Fashion design is a discipline that sits at the intersection of creativity, craft, and commerce. Designers must understand the cultural and aesthetic context in which their work will be received, the technical processes through which garments are realised, and the commercial and industrial frameworks within which fashion operates as a global industry. A fashion design degree develops all three dimensions, asking you to develop a distinctive creative vision alongside the pattern cutting, construction, and materials knowledge that allows you to translate that vision into physical garments. At the University of Westminster, this three-year full-time BA has an exceptional reputation for alignment with the international fashion industry and provides outstanding opportunities to engage with the industry throughout the course. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, giving you direct experience of professional fashion contexts before you graduate and the chance to build the industry networks that support a career in a highly competitive sector. Westminster is based in London, one of the world's great fashion capitals, and the proximity to the industry is a significant advantage throughout the degree. You will develop your design skills across a range of clothing categories, building a portfolio that demonstrates your creative range and technical abilities. Fashion design graduates work as designers, pattern cutters, design assistants, and creative directors in clothing brands, fashion houses, and retail companies. Many work in London, New York, Milan, and Paris, the centres of the global fashion industry, while others build careers with British brands and retailers or in costume design for theatre and film. Some graduates establish their own labels, while others move into fashion buying, merchandising, fashion styling, and related commercial roles. The creative and technical skills developed by a fashion design degree also transfer into product design, textile design, and adjacent creative fields. Further study at postgraduate level in fashion design, luxury brand management, or sustainable fashion is available for those who wish to specialise.
