BA Fashion Design Technology: Menswear
About this course
Fashion design technology with a specialism in menswear is a discipline that sits at the intersection of creative vision and technical craft. Menswear has its own distinct history, conventions, and aesthetic codes, from the tailoring traditions of Savile Row to the streetwear and sportswear movements that have transformed what men wear in the twenty-first century. Designing menswear demands an understanding of proportion, silhouette, fabric behaviour, and the cultural contexts in which clothes are made and worn, as well as the technical skills to bring a design from concept to finished garment. At the University of the Arts, London, you will study fashion design technology with a focus on menswear, developing both your creative design practice and your technical construction skills. The programme engages with the history and contemporary landscape of menswear, and encourages you to develop a personal creative vision that is grounded in technical competence. There is also the opportunity to study abroad short-term during the summer break, subject to meeting requirements, which broadens your horizons and helps you build an international professional network. The programme runs over three years full-time. Graduates of fashion design technology menswear programmes work in fashion design, garment construction, pattern cutting, product development, buying, and technical design roles within fashion brands, manufacturers, and retailers. The combination of creative and technical skills developed at UAL is highly regarded in the industry, and many graduates go on to work with global brands, establish independent labels, or pursue postgraduate study in fashion design or fashion technology to develop a more specialised practice.
