BA Fashion Design
About this course
Fashion design is a creative discipline that sits at the intersection of visual art, craft, commercial culture, and personal identity. Fashion designers create the clothing and accessories that people use to present themselves to the world, and in doing so they engage with questions of culture, gender, body, sustainability, and the economics of making and selling garments at scale. The best fashion design is simultaneously original and wearable, personally expressive and commercially viable, and it requires the mastery of both design thinking and technical making. At Sheffield Hallam this three-year full-time programme is available with a foundation year for students who need additional preparation before the main degree. The programme also includes a sandwich year and a work placement, ensuring that you develop professional experience alongside your creative and technical skills. You will study fashion design across a diverse range of sectors, experiencing different approaches to design and making as you discover your individual focus within the field. The curriculum develops your skills in design research, sketching, pattern cutting, garment construction, and digital design tools, alongside an understanding of the fashion industry's commercial, cultural, and sustainability dimensions. Sheffield Hallam has strong industry connections and the programme is designed to develop graduates who are ready for the realities of professional fashion practice. Fashion design graduates pursue careers as fashion designers, garment technologists, pattern cutters, design assistants, costume designers, and product developers across fashion brands, manufacturers, retailers, and studios. Many graduates also work in adjacent creative fields, including styling, fashion journalism, fashion buying, and trend forecasting. The growing importance of sustainable design practice is creating demand for graduates who understand how to design with environmental and social responsibility. Postgraduate study in fashion design, sustainable fashion, or fashion management is a natural next step for those who wish to develop a specialism or build a business.
