BA Fashion Design
About this course
Fashion design is a discipline at the intersection of creativity, craft, and commerce, concerned with the conception and construction of clothing and the broader cultural meanings that garments carry. It demands both artistic vision and technical mastery, requiring designers to move from initial concept through pattern cutting, fabric selection, garment construction, and presentation to a finished collection that communicates something meaningful about its moment. Fashion is also increasingly confronted with its responsibilities around sustainability, diversity, and the social and environmental impact of how clothes are made and consumed. At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year, full-time degree develops your skills in experimental and industry-standard approaches to pattern cutting and garment construction, encouraging you to push the boundaries of your design thinking while remaining grounded in the realities of professional practice. Sustainable practice, diversity, and inclusion are integrated throughout the curriculum, ensuring that you develop as a designer with both technical excellence and ethical consciousness. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, giving you the opportunity to spend extended time in a professional fashion environment, and also includes the possibility of a year abroad as well as work placement opportunities. Graduates from fashion design programmes work across the fashion industry in roles including garment design, pattern cutting, fashion styling, visual merchandising, and fashion buying and merchandising. Many graduates also work in adjacent creative fields such as costume design, textile design, fashion communication, and retail management. Some go on to launch their own labels or small fashion businesses. Postgraduate study in fashion design, sustainable fashion, or fashion management is an option for those who want to develop specialist expertise or explore the intellectual dimensions of the field in greater depth.
