BA Fashion Design
About this course
Fashion Design is a discipline that operates at the intersection of creativity, culture, craft and commerce. It asks how clothing communicates identity, how collections are developed from initial concept to finished garment, and how the design process can respond to the cultural, material and social contexts that give fashion meaning. At its most ambitious, fashion design is not simply about producing attractive objects but about expressing ideas, challenging conventions and engaging with the world through form, fabric and the body. It demands both artistic vision and technical mastery of the processes through which that vision is realised. At the Glasgow School of Art this four-year full-time BA (Hons) nurtures a dynamic, inclusive and supportive environment oriented towards preparing graduates for the future in its full range. The programme seeks to develop assured and specialist fashion designers with individual creative identities, supporting students whether they intend to pursue careers in industry, work with community groups, establish their own practice or continue into further education. You will have the opportunity to examine the field of fashion design in depth, developing creative freedom alongside technical skill and an understanding of the diverse audiences, concepts and processes that give fashion design its reach and relevance. Graduates from Glasgow School of Art's Fashion Design programme go on to careers in fashion design, pattern-cutting, textile design, fashion journalism, styling, fashion buying and merchandising, and creative direction. Some establish their own labels or studio practices, while others find roles in the broader creative industries in areas such as costume design, set and exhibition design, and art direction. The programme also provides strong preparation for postgraduate study in fashion design, sustainable fashion, fashion curation or related creative disciplines.
