BSc Events Management
About this course
Events management is the discipline of planning, organising and delivering experiences that bring people together, from corporate conferences and product launches to music festivals, sporting occasions and community events. It is a field that requires an unusual combination of creative vision, meticulous logistical planning, financial discipline, interpersonal skill and the ability to manage risk and respond calmly when things go wrong. Events are significant economic activity: the sector contributes substantially to the UK economy and generates employment across hospitality, entertainment, media and marketing. At the University of Lincoln this three-year programme develops the full range of knowledge and skills the industry demands. You will study event planning and production, financial management, marketing and communications, venue management, risk assessment and the legal frameworks that govern public events. The programme also develops your understanding of sustainability in events, an increasingly important consideration as the industry responds to pressure to reduce its environmental impact. A sandwich year gives you a substantial period of professional experience within an events organisation, and work placements and a year abroad are also built into the programme. These opportunities mean you graduate with real professional experience rather than only classroom knowledge, which is particularly important in an industry where practical track record and personal contacts play a significant role in career development. Graduates work across the full spectrum of the events industry. Corporate events, wedding and celebration planning, music and festival production, sports events management, conference and exhibition management, and arts and cultural events are among the most common sectors. Roles in event production, marketing and communications, venue management and event technology are all open to graduates of this discipline. Some choose to establish their own events companies. Many graduates also find that the transferable skills the degree develops, including project management, budget management and client communication, open doors in broader hospitality, marketing and management roles. Postgraduate study in events, marketing or hospitality management is an option for those who want to develop further expertise.
