BSc Environmental Science
About this course
Environmental science brings together the physical, chemical and biological sciences to understand the processes that govern the natural world and the ways in which human activity is transforming it. Climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, resource depletion and the search for more sustainable ways of living are among the defining challenges of our time, and environmental scientists are central to generating the evidence base that informs policy, regulation and practical action. At Nottingham Trent University you will study the multidisciplinary foundations of the discipline, exploring the physical and chemical processes operating within the Earth system alongside the ecological and biological dimensions of environmental change. You will examine issues including natural resource management, waste, conservation and sustainability, and develop skills in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, data interpretation and environmental assessment. The course is fully accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences, which is a recognised mark of quality and relevance to the profession. The programme runs over three years full time. Graduates from environmental science degrees work across a wide range of sectors and roles. Environmental consultancies, government agencies, conservation organisations, water companies, planning departments and international bodies all employ environmental scientists in roles including environmental adviser, pollution control officer, conservation manager, sustainability consultant and climate scientist. The combination of scientific rigour and applied problem-solving the degree develops is valued wherever organisations need to understand and manage their relationship with the natural environment. Postgraduate study in environmental management, ecology, climate science or sustainability provides further specialisation for those who want to pursue research or more senior professional roles.
