BSc Environmental Management (with Professional Studies)
About this course
Environmental management is the discipline concerned with how we understand, protect, and sustainably use the natural systems that support human and ecological life. It sits at the intersection of natural science, social science, economics, and policy, recognising that environmental challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to pollution and resource depletion, cannot be addressed by scientific knowledge alone but require understanding of the social, economic, and political contexts in which environmental decisions are made. At Queen's University Belfast this four-year full-time BSc explores the physical, social, economic, and cultural aspects of environmental management, combining science, geography, and environmental planning to give you a genuinely integrated understanding of the environmental systems we inhabit. You will study sustainable development, land use planning, environmental protection legislation, ecological systems, and the economic frameworks used to value ecosystem services. The professional studies element brings a structured environmental work placement into the degree, giving you real applied experience in environmental management before you graduate and allowing you to develop the practical competence and professional network that employers in the sector value. Graduates are well placed to work in environmental consultancy, government and regulatory agencies, conservation organisations, sustainability roles in the private sector, local authority planning departments, and international environmental organisations. The combination of scientific knowledge and policy understanding is particularly valuable in roles that require both technical environmental expertise and the ability to translate it into practical decisions and recommendations. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in environmental management, environmental science, or sustainability.
