MSci Environmental Geoscience with a Year in Industry
About this course
Environmental geoscience applies the knowledge and methods of the earth sciences, including geology, geochemistry, hydrology, and soil science, to the environmental challenges that human activity and natural processes are creating for our planet. Where pure geoscience focuses on understanding how the Earth works, environmental geoscience directs that understanding towards practical problems: contamination and remediation, water resources and quality, land stability, climate change impacts on the landscape, and the environmental consequences of resource extraction. In an era when these challenges are intensifying, geoscientists who can combine rigorous scientific knowledge with problem-solving skill are in genuine demand. This five-year full-time degree at Royal Holloway, University of London includes a year in industry and a year abroad. You will develop the scientific foundations of the discipline alongside the practical and analytical skills needed to work on real environmental problems, learning to conduct fieldwork, interpret geochemical and geological data, and apply your knowledge to the kinds of questions that environmental consultancies, regulatory agencies, and resource companies actually face. The year in industry gives you twelve months of professional experience, the year abroad exposes you to different environments and research approaches, and together they substantially enrich your professional preparation alongside your academic development. A typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points reflects an accessible but scientifically rigorous programme. Graduates from environmental geoscience programmes move into careers in environmental consultancy and management, hydrogeology, contaminated land assessment, climate adaptation and resilience, geological survey, the energy sector, and government environmental agencies. Many continue to postgraduate study in environmental science, geochemistry, hydrogeology, or related disciplines.
