About this course

English literature and creative writing form a natural partnership: literary study teaches you to read with care and attention, to recognise craft and technique, and to understand how writers make choices; creative writing asks you to apply that understanding by making those choices yourself. Reading great writers with a writer's eye changes what you see on the page, and writing seriously changes how you read. At the University of Nottingham, this combination is approached with rigour in both directions. The programme includes a foundation year, which makes it accessible to students who have the intellectual curiosity and creative ability but need a more supported entry route into degree-level study. Over the full four years you will engage with a wide range of literary texts across periods and traditions, developing the critical skills to analyse and interpret them with sophistication. In the creative writing strand you will produce work in prose fiction, poetry, and other forms, participating in writing workshops that teach you to revise and develop your work in dialogue with peers and tutors. The two strands reinforce each other throughout the degree, giving you both the vocabulary to understand literary craft and the practice of exercising it yourself. The typical entry tariff for this programme is 152 UCAS points, and all candidates are considered individually. Graduates from English and creative writing programmes go on to careers in publishing, journalism, education, communications, public relations, copywriting, broadcasting, the charity sector, and arts administration, as well as developing their own creative practice. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in creative writing, English literature, publishing, and education, as well as scriptwriting and screenwriting programmes.
