About this course
English as a degree subject goes considerably further than a love of reading. It is a rigorous intellectual discipline that trains you to read with sustained attention, to construct and defend complex arguments, and to understand how literary works relate to the historical, cultural, and social contexts in which they were produced and received. Literature in all its forms, from poetry and drama to the novel, from the medieval period to the contemporary moment, provides the material through which you develop these habits of mind. The skills you build are transferable to almost any professional context that requires clear thinking and effective communication. At Manchester Metropolitan University, this three-year BA (Hons) analyses literature across the full span of the English tradition, from the Renaissance to the present day, and considers how literature intersects with other cultural forms including film, art, and popular culture. You will read widely, write argumentatively, and develop the ability to situate texts within their contexts while also attending carefully to the formal choices that shape how they work. The degree includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities, allowing you to apply the analytical and communication skills developed through your literary study in professional settings and to graduate with a clearer sense of how those skills translate into the working world.
