MA English Literature/German
About this course
English literature and German is a degree that unites two of the great literary and intellectual traditions of Europe. English literature at the University of Glasgow spans all aspects of literature in English from early modern to postmodern, with expertise spanning American, Irish, and postcolonial literatures, critical theory, creative writing, and the relationship between literature and other arts, media, and science. German opens access to one of the most important philosophical and literary traditions in the Western world, from Goethe and Schiller through Kafka, Brecht, and the rich field of contemporary German-language writing, alongside the history and culture of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. This five-year full-time programme at the University of Glasgow develops your literary analysis and critical writing skills in both languages alongside high-level German language proficiency. You will read widely across both canons, engage with major critical and theoretical debates, and develop the ability to produce sophisticated written and oral arguments about literary texts. A sandwich year with a work placement gives you direct professional experience in a relevant field, developing your employability alongside your academic development. Entry typically requires around 200 UCAS tariff points. Graduates of English literature and German work in publishing, journalism, teaching, translation, diplomacy, cultural institutions, the creative industries, and a wide range of professional fields in which advanced literacy, multilingual capability, and critical thinking are valued. The combination is particularly distinctive for roles at the intersection of English and German-speaking cultures. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in English literature, German studies, or comparative literature.
