BA English Literature/Education
About this course
English literature and education is a combination that pairs the analytical and creative engagement of literary study with the theoretical and practical understanding of education as a discipline and profession. English literature develops your ability to read closely, interpret texts in their historical and cultural contexts, and write clearly and persuasively about what you find. Education studies examines how learning happens, how educational systems are organised and governed, and how schools and other institutions can better serve diverse learners. Together, they provide a broadly based humanities education with a particular relevance for careers involving communication, learning, and the development of young people. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time degree gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a broad range of texts from medieval through to modern, evaluated from linguistic, stylistic, political, and social perspectives. You will spend approximately half your time on English literature and half on education, developing both the literary knowledge and the educational understanding that the programme aims to build. The degree is taught by dedicated experts often in small tutorial and seminar groups, and it develops essential employability skills including teamwork, communication, and time management. A typical entry tariff of 120 points applies. Graduates from English literature and education programmes are well placed for careers in teaching, particularly in secondary education with further professional training, as well as in educational support, curriculum development, publishing, journalism, and the cultural sector. The combination is particularly relevant for those wishing to teach English at secondary level, and many graduates go on to postgraduate teacher training. Others pursue careers in writing, communications, arts education, youth work, and the civil service.
