BA English Literature
About this course
English literature is the study of how writers have used language to represent experience, imagine possibilities and make sense of the world across a vast range of periods, genres and cultural contexts. It encompasses poetry, fiction, drama and non-fictional prose from the medieval period to the present day, and in its best forms it asks not just what texts say but how they say it, what assumptions they embody, and what they reveal about the societies and individuals that produced them. Reading literature carefully develops your capacity to engage with complexity, ambiguity and nuance in ways that are valuable across an enormous range of professional and personal contexts. At Swansea University, this three-year full-time programme explores texts within their cultural and historical frameworks, asking what they mean for the world we live in today. You will engage with literature across different periods and traditions, developing the skills of close reading, critical argument and clear written expression that literature study demands. The programme explicitly connects the intellectual skills of literary study to the demands of a fast-changing job market, recognising that employers value graduates who can analyse complex material, communicate persuasively and engage thoughtfully with difficult questions. Graduates from English literature programmes pursue careers across education, publishing, journalism, copywriting, public relations, communications, content creation, the civil service, law, broadcasting and the creative industries. Many go on to teach in schools or universities, while others build careers as editors, writers, journalists and communications professionals. The close reading, critical thinking and writing skills developed through English literature are among the most transferable that any humanities degree provides, and graduates consistently find that their training is valued across a range of sectors that depend on clear, effective communication. Postgraduate study in English literature, creative writing or education is a natural next step.
