LLB English Law & Hong Kong Law
About this course
A degree in English Law and Hong Kong Law is a rare and genuinely distinctive qualification that prepares graduates to practise in two of the world's most important legal jurisdictions. English law, rooted in the common law tradition, is the basis of legal systems across much of the English-speaking world and is the governing law in a huge proportion of international commercial contracts. Hong Kong law draws on the same common law heritage but operates within a unique constitutional framework following the handover to China in 1997, making it one of the most interesting and internationally significant legal systems in Asia. At King's College London, this four-year full-time programme allows you to study both legal systems in depth, gaining two reputable qualifications in a single degree. You will cover the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, public law and criminal law, while simultaneously developing a thorough understanding of the Hong Kong legal system, its constitutional basis under the Basic Law, and its major substantive areas. The programme develops the analytical rigour, precise legal reasoning and written advocacy skills that all serious legal education demands, while also building the international perspective that distinguishes graduates who are equipped for cross-border legal practice. Graduates are well positioned for careers in commercial law, international arbitration, finance law, corporate law and other areas where the ability to work across English and Hong Kong law is a genuine professional asset. Law firms with offices in both jurisdictions, international financial institutions and multinational companies are among the most natural employers. Further professional qualifications and bar or solicitor training in either or both jurisdictions are natural next steps.
