MA English Language/Philosophy
About this course
English language and philosophy is a combination that places two of the most fundamental forms of human inquiry side by side. English language, studied as an academic discipline, examines the structure, history, variation, and social functions of the language, asking what all of this tells us about culture, society, and ourselves. Philosophy applies rigorous argument to fundamental questions about knowledge, reality, ethics, mind, and language itself. The two disciplines share an interest in how language works and what it can and cannot do, but they approach that shared interest from very different angles, making their combination particularly productive. At the University of Glasgow this four-year full-time degree, following the Scottish honours model, develops your expertise in English language and linguistics alongside a thorough engagement with philosophical reasoning and argument. In English language you will study topics including the history of English, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, syntax, and semantics. In philosophy you will engage with core areas including logic, epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic environment and to encounter other approaches to both disciplines. The typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the competitive demand for places and the high expectations of the Glasgow programme. Graduates of English language and philosophy programmes develop skills in precise argument, careful reading, research, and communication that transfer across many professional contexts. Careers in education, publishing, journalism, law, the civil service, communications, policy, and philosophy-adjacent fields such as ethics advisory roles are all accessible. The combination is particularly strong preparation for postgraduate study in linguistics, philosophy, law, or cognitive science. Many graduates also use the philosophical training as a foundation for professional qualifications, including graduate entry to law or chartered qualification routes in several professions.
