About this course

English language and music is a combination that brings together two disciplines concerned, in different but complementary ways, with the structures through which human beings make and share meaning. English language and linguistics combines the study of how the English language works at the levels of sound, grammar, meaning and use, past and present, examining what this tells us about culture, society and the nature of communication itself. Music, alongside this, develops your understanding of musical form, history, theory and performance, exploring the ways in which organised sound creates aesthetic and emotional experience. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year programme gives you the opportunity to develop rigorous linguistic analysis skills alongside a thorough engagement with music across its historical and theoretical dimensions. You will study the structure and meaning of English in both its historical development and its contemporary variation, while in music you will develop your understanding of composition, performance, musicology and music theory. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the chance to study at an international partner institution and extend your perspective on both disciplines. Graduates from this combination pursue careers across a wide range of fields. English language training opens pathways in education, speech and language therapy, publishing, journalism, lexicography, natural language processing and a range of roles where precise understanding of language is an asset. The music dimension adds relevance to careers in music education, music journalism, the arts sector, broadcasting and media, community music and cultural management. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in linguistics, musicology, music education, communication or applied language studies. The capacity for rigorous analysis that both disciplines develop is valued across any professional context where understanding how communication works is important.
