About this course

Language is the medium through which we construct identity, build relationships, express ideas and navigate the social world. English language and linguistics examines that medium with scientific rigour and critical curiosity, asking how language is structured, how it is acquired, how it changes over time, and how it is used differently across communities, contexts and cultures. It is a discipline that reveals patterns in something we all take for granted, and in doing so opens up new ways of understanding communication, cognition and social life. At Manchester Metropolitan University you will study English language and linguistics over three years of full-time study, exploring how language links to identity, social perception and communication in ways that are both theoretically grounded and practically relevant. You will develop skills in linguistic analysis at the levels of sound, structure, meaning and use, and investigate how those features vary across social groups, geographical regions and historical periods. The programme includes a sandwich year, providing professional experience that connects your linguistic knowledge to applied contexts such as education, language services, communications or research. Work placement is also integrated into the programme, and the typical tariff of 120 makes the degree accessible to students from a range of educational backgrounds who are genuinely curious about how language works. Graduates work in education, speech and language therapy pathways, communications, publishing, copywriting, journalism, human-computer interaction, language technology, policy and public service contexts. The analytical and communication skills developed through linguistic study, including systematic observation, evidence evaluation and clear writing, are valued across a wide range of professional environments. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in applied linguistics, TESOL, speech and language sciences, education or related fields, using their undergraduate knowledge as a foundation for specialist practice or academic research.
