English as a discipline encompasses the study of language, literature, and the many ways in which human beings use words to make meaning and communicate across time and culture. Whether approached through the lens of linguistics, literary criticism or creative writing, an English degree develops your ability to read with precision and depth, to construct well-reasoned arguments, and to communicate ideas clearly and persuasively, skills that transfer with remarkable versatility to almost any career or area of further study. At the University of Chester, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in an international context and develop the personal and intellectual independence that extended study outside the UK encourages. The degree explores the building blocks of language and how they combine to produce meaning, examines how languages evolve over time, and analyses real-world language use across a range of registers and contexts from everyday conversation to literary texts. You will develop critical frameworks for interpreting complex works and will study writing that spans periods, cultures and genres, building both your analytical capabilities and your knowledge of how English has been used as a creative and communicative medium across the centuries. English graduates bring strong analytical, communication and interpretive skills to a wide range of careers. Teaching at primary, secondary or further education level is a common path, as is journalism, publishing, communications, marketing and public relations. The civil service, law, broadcasting, arts administration and the charity sector also regularly recruit English graduates. Many go on to postgraduate study in English literature, linguistics, creative writing, education or related fields, and the degree is a well-regarded foundation for further professional training in law or journalism.
