BA English: Creative and Professional Writing
About this course
Creative and professional writing is a discipline that develops both the craft of writing and the wider range of skills that allow writers to work effectively in the real world. It recognises that the techniques behind a compelling short story, a strong piece of journalism, or persuasive professional communication are more closely connected than they might appear: all require understanding your audience, finding the right voice, and making purposeful decisions about form and content. Studying writing at degree level means taking those decisions seriously and developing the critical self-awareness to improve them. At the University of Sunderland this part-time programme allows you to focus on English with a creative and professional writing specialisation at a pace that fits your existing commitments. The course develops your creative talent alongside practical professional skills: pitching ideas, presenting work, networking in writing-related industries, and building a portfolio that represents what you can do. You will work across a range of modes and contexts, developing both your distinctive voice as a writer and your ability to adapt that voice for different purposes and audiences. The programme cultivates the discipline and self-management that professional writing demands, alongside the critical reading and research skills that give your writing substance and depth. You will learn to give and receive constructive feedback, to revise with purpose, and to approach your own work with both creative ambition and professional rigour. Graduates of creative and professional writing programmes pursue careers in publishing, journalism, content creation, marketing and communications, public relations, broadcasting, teaching, and arts administration. Many work across several of these areas simultaneously, combining freelance writing with other professional roles. Postgraduate routes include creative writing MFAs, journalism training, publishing programmes, and research degrees in English literature or cultural studies.
