MA English and Philosophy
About this course
English and philosophy is a pairing that puts two of the most rigorous intellectual traditions in dialogue with each other. Literature asks how language gives form to human experience and how reading closely can reveal what is otherwise hidden; philosophy asks how we know what we know, what we ought to do, and what it means for something to be real. Together they develop a rare combination of interpretive sensitivity and analytical precision, and students who study both tend to find that each discipline illuminates and enriches the other. At the University of Dundee, this four-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you the experience of studying in a different cultural and academic context that can open new perspectives on both English literature and philosophical questions. You will read widely across literary history, developing the analytical writing skills and the close attention to language that the discipline demands, while simultaneously engaging with the major philosophical traditions, from ancient Greek thought to contemporary analytic and continental philosophy. Dundee's environment combines strong teaching with an approachable academic community, and the Scottish four-year structure gives the programme breadth that shorter courses cannot replicate. Graduates of English and philosophy programmes are sought by employers who need people who can think clearly, write persuasively, and engage seriously with ideas. Law, journalism, publishing, public policy, the civil service, education, and academic research are all established career destinations. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, English, literature, creative writing, or law. The combination of literary sensitivity and philosophical rigour is valued across a wide range of professional and intellectual contexts, and the year abroad adds an international dimension that employers increasingly notice.
