BA English and Media
About this course
English and media is a combination that places the study of language and literature alongside the analysis of the systems and forms through which contemporary culture is produced and circulated. English develops your capacity to read and write with precision and critical depth, engaging with texts across genres and historical periods and asking what they mean, how they work and why they matter. Media studies analyses the institutions, technologies and representations through which news, entertainment, advertising and social communication reach their audiences, from broadcast television and print journalism to digital platforms and social media. Together they provide a rich and versatile framework for understanding culture and communication. At Nottingham Trent University, this part-time programme allows you to study alongside other commitments, and it includes both a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in professional environments as part of your degree. You will study literary analysis, cultural theory, media institutions, narrative forms, journalism and digital communication, developing both your critical analytical skills and your practical communication competencies. The part-time mode gives you time to absorb ideas and connect them to broader life and professional experience. Graduates work in journalism, publishing, broadcasting, content creation, public relations, marketing, education, the civil service, arts organisations and the creative industries. The combination of close reading skills and media awareness is valued wherever organisations need people who can communicate clearly and think critically about how messages are constructed and received. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in English literature, media studies, creative writing, journalism or cultural studies, or use their analytical training as a foundation for careers in law, policy or professional communications.
