About this course

English Literature and Hispanic Studies is a degree for students who want to engage seriously with two of the richest literary and cultural traditions in the world while developing genuine competence in the Spanish language. English literature gives you access to a vast body of writing in one of the world's most widely read languages, developing the close reading, interpretive, and critical skills that are at the heart of the humanities. Hispanic Studies opens the literatures of Spain and Latin America, a tradition that includes Cervantes and Lorca, Borges and Garcia Marquez, as well as contemporary writing of great vitality and diversity. At the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement component. You will develop your Spanish language skills to a high level while studying the literary and cultural traditions of the Hispanic world alongside major texts and movements in English literature. The combination allows you to make connections across languages and cultures, to read texts in their original languages, and to develop a genuinely comparative perspective on how literature works and what it does. The programme is designed for students who are either beginning Spanish or continuing from A-level, and the language component is fully integrated with the cultural and literary study so that your reading in Spanish and your language development reinforce each other. Warwick has a strong English department and a well-established Hispanic Studies programme, and the placement year gives you professional experience to complement your academic work. Graduates move into careers in publishing, journalism, education, translation and interpreting, cultural institutions, international business, public relations, and the media. The combination of literary critical skills and Spanish language competence is distinctive and valued in organisations that work across the English-speaking and Spanish-speaking worlds. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in literature, linguistics, Hispanic studies, or translation.
