BA English and Creative Writing with Foundation Year
About this course
English and creative writing at degree level is about developing both the critical eye and the creative voice. The two are more deeply connected than they might first appear: reading literature with care and rigour is one of the most effective ways of understanding how writers make choices, and creative writing develops attentiveness to language that makes literary criticism sharper and more grounded. Studying them together means you are simultaneously learning to analyse what others have made and developing your own capacity to make something worth reading. At Keele this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing supported preparation before you begin the main degree. Across the programme you will explore literature across a wide range of periods, forms, and cultural contexts, building your critical and analytical skills through close reading, research, and written argument. Alongside this, you will engage in creative practice across several genres, developing your voice as a writer and your ability to work with feedback and revision. Work placement opportunities provide insight into how the skills you are developing translate into various industries, connecting your academic learning to professional contexts before you graduate. The programme builds a wide range of transferable skills, including critical thinking, clear writing, the ability to synthesise complex material, and the confidence to express original ideas. Graduates from English and creative writing programmes find careers in publishing, journalism, copywriting, content creation, marketing, education, the media, and the arts. The writing skills developed through the creative side are commercially applicable in many contexts, while the critical and analytical abilities from the literary study are valued in fields including law, policy, consultancy, and the civil service. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, whether in creative writing, English literature, publishing, or professional programmes in law, journalism, or teaching.
