BEng Engineering with Deferred Choice of Specialism
About this course
Engineering is one of the broadest and most consequential of disciplines. At its core, it is the application of scientific principles to design, build, and maintain the systems, structures, and devices that make modern life possible. But engineering is not monolithic: different specialisms, from aerospace and civil to chemical, electrical, mechanical, and medical engineering, address quite different kinds of problems with overlapping but distinct bodies of knowledge and technique. Choosing which to pursue is itself an important decision. At Swansea University, this four-year BEng programme is designed for students who are not yet certain which engineering discipline is right for them, or who need to build their foundational knowledge before committing to a specialism. The first year is an integrated foundation year, equipping you with the mathematical, scientific, and engineering fundamentals that underpin all the engineering disciplines available at Swansea. At the end of this year, you progress into the full engineering degree in the specialism you choose, whether that is aerospace, civil, chemical, electrical, materials science, mechanical, or medical engineering. The foundation year is the first year of a four-year BEng and is not a standalone qualification. The typical entry tariff is 88 UCAS points. Graduates of engineering programmes at Swansea go on to careers across a wide range of industries and sectors. The specialism chosen at the end of the foundation year will shape your career most directly, but all engineering graduates share a core of analytical thinking, problem-solving, and technical competence that is valued across many contexts. Industry, the public sector, consultancy, and research are all common destinations. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study or professional accreditation toward Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status, which enhances career prospects and professional recognition significantly.
