BSc Electronic & Software Engineering
About this course
Electronic and software engineering sits at the junction of hardware and software, and in the modern world that junction is everywhere. The computerised and embedded systems that control everything from aircraft and vehicles to medical devices, industrial machinery, and consumer electronics depend on engineers who understand both the electronic hardware and the software that drives it. This combination of knowledge, difficult to acquire in depth from a single-strand programme, is what electronic and software engineering is specifically designed to develop. At the University of Glasgow this four-year, full-time programme provides the knowledge required to lead teams that design and build the computerised and embedded systems of the future. You will study electronic circuits, digital systems, signals and communications, and microcontroller design alongside software engineering, algorithms, programming, and operating systems, developing the ability to work fluently across both domains. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner university and to encounter different research traditions and engineering cultures. Graduates of electronic and software engineering work across a wide range of industries. Many move into telecommunications, semiconductor design, embedded systems development, automotive engineering, defence and aerospace, consumer electronics, and the rapidly growing field of the internet of things. Others build careers in software engineering, systems architecture, or technical project management for organisations whose products or services depend on the integration of hardware and software. Glasgow's research strengths in electronics and computing, and its connections to major technology employers in Scotland and beyond, give graduates a strong platform from which to launch their careers. Many pursue chartered engineer status and some continue to postgraduate research in a specialist area.
