Structural and fire safety engineering is a discipline concerned with making the built environment safe for the people who occupy it. Structural engineering examines how buildings and other structures carry loads, resist forces, and maintain integrity over time, while fire safety engineering applies scientific principles to the prevention, detection, and management of fire in buildings. The two fields are deeply interconnected: the structural performance of buildings in fire is a critical safety consideration, and the most effective approaches to fire safety are rooted in an understanding of how both fire and structure behave under extreme conditions. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme addresses both disciplines together, developing your understanding of the scientific and engineering principles that underpin structural design and fire safety analysis. You will study structural mechanics, fire dynamics, heat transfer, materials behaviour at elevated temperatures, and the design codes and performance-based methods used in practice.
