About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is fundamental to modern society in ways that are easy to underestimate because the technology is so pervasive. Advanced computer systems, digital circuits, power electronics, communications networks, photonics, robotics, medical equipment, electric vehicles and the next generation of mobile data transmission all depend on the principles and innovations that electrical and electronic engineers develop and apply. The discipline combines electromagnetic theory, circuit design, signal processing, control systems, embedded computing and materials science, and its scope continues to expand as digital technology penetrates more of the physical world. At the University of Aberdeen you will study electrical and electronic engineering over five years of full-time study, on a programme leading to a Master of Engineering degree. The five-year integrated structure allows you to develop genuine depth in the discipline, progressing from foundational principles to advanced specialist content and a substantial research or design project at master's level. A year abroad is built into the programme, broadening your engineering perspective through study at an international partner institution. The typical tariff of 152 reflects the mathematical and scientific preparation expected from students entering a programme of this depth and duration. Graduates of this MEng programme are highly employable across a wide range of sectors. Career paths include power engineering and the energy sector, telecommunications and wireless systems, semiconductor and photonics industries, automotive and aerospace electronics, defence systems, robotics and automation, biomedical engineering and the rapidly growing fields of smart systems and the Internet of Things. The five-year MEng qualification provides a strong platform for professional registration as a chartered engineer with the IET or IEE, and the year abroad adds an international dimension that is increasingly valued by global engineering employers. Many graduates also pursue doctoral research in specialist areas of electrical or electronic engineering.
